X-Yachts Adriatic Cup 2003

Competition and amusement, the perfect blend to spend an excitingweekend. With this thought in mind, the third X-Yachts Adriatic X-Cuptook place in Venice. The event was organized by the X-Yachts Adriaticteam, with the co-operation of Compagnia della Vela, who had the boatsidyllically moored next to S. George Island. On the 14 and 15 June, 32 X-Yachts raced in the picturesque setting ofthe Venice lagoon. The new X-43 had her debut and was helmed by the owner of X-Yachts Adriatico,Franco Corazza, aided by his exceptional crew. Many well-known andhigh-level sailors participated in the event including Alberto Barovierand Cristian Griggio, who had competed in the America’s Cup. The sponsors were Casinò di Venezia, Banca Antonveneta, Effetre,Struttura, Zantomio Gioielli Kontemporanei, Bipielle Ducato Leasing andX-Yachts Italia, all providing prizes and trophies for the event. Withthe presence of sailors from Austria, Germany, Slovenia and Croatia theorganizers ensured an international and exciting atmosphere.

Close RacingCourses were well set and the judges Emilietta Barbieri and GiuseppinaDe Rossi made fair decisions. Saturday’s first race was the mostexciting one with wind from 5 to 6 knots coming from 160 degrees, whilethe more difficult second race had a 5 to 6 knots easterly wind,however, with a tendency to “blow out” without leaving the usualafternoon breeze. Searching for the best wind zone was Nicola Tognana’s IMX 45 “Umana”,who came third in the first race, and leading in front of “Take Five” inthe second. Dal Pont’s IMX 45 “Take Five” kept the lead in the SportClass and became overall winner, while Paolo Masiero, X-412 “Kemit”,successfully fought against Beniamino Ros’ X-412 “Tutto depende” for thepalm of victory in the Family Class. Congratulations go to StefanoAngelini in his X-332 “Giorgia” with helmsman Pier Francesco Dal Bon,winner of the Class C, and Domenico Spezzapria, X-442 “Il Colore delVento”, first in Class B. The owner of the 2002 title, Ivano Ferro, onboard of the IMX 40 “Esmeralda” placed third in Class A.Social lifeThe entertainment continued ashore as the organizers took thecompetitors by steamer up Canal Grande to the Venice Casino. The sailorshad left behind the sails, ropes and competition and had an enjoyableevening including toasts and awarding of prizes.
